date night: work with what you've got.

I'm quickly learning that date night is
important when you have a baby.

Not that it wasn't important before, but basically any/every night was date night because we had uninterrupted time together every single day.  Even though we didn't necessarily go anywhere, just watching a movie or hanging out and talking about our days without being sleep-deprived and/or having an infant demanding our attention was a date in and of itself.  At the time I didn't realize it, but now I would kill for some time to just cozy up alone on the couch.  Oh those were the days!

So....now we have date night.

It's not an actual night.  Just something we're going to make a habit of.  We were definitely due this past weekend as I'd only had a total of 2 hours away from Fern since she was born AND it was our 10 year dating anniversary.  BUT...we're also on a tight budget with me not working.

SO...we decided to work with what we had:

A Burgerville gift card
and a house that needs remodeling.

The entire date didn't cost us anything, but we had a blast.  And even though we weren't going anywhere fancy, I still put on a lace top and heels to make the most of it.  You can never go wrong with heels and looking and feeling pretty is always a good idea.

{Dinner: burgers, fries and we even shared a milkshake.}

{Our destination}

{Being silly in the shower section.}
*A friend of ours saw this picture on instagram and said it looked like
this was the section of the store where you go to buy a wife.  Haha!

{Dramatically contemplating flooring.}

We were only gone just over two hours and it wasn't fancy, but it was just fun to be together.  And Home Depot actually is a fun date destination - it's nice to dream about projects together...even if you can't always afford them :).

What are some of your favorite
simple/inexpensive date night ideas?

  1. Hahaha! What a great date night:) That burger looks delish ... too close to lunch time this side of the world.

    I do think the best dates are the ones that aren't necessarily fancy, but are just good fun!

  3. I don't have any date night ideas, as it's been AGES since I had a date. Sigh. Although the last fun date night I had was when my ex and I dressed up like zombies, then had a "Walking Dead" marathon. That was pretty rad.

  4. Home Depot is much, much better married. It was a nightmare when I was a child. It seems like my parents were ALWAYS there and I truly dreaded going. Running up and down the isles of toilets is only entertaining for so long..

  5. So cute! It's so great to see people making the most of their time together :) My boyfriend recently read an article about actually squeezing the quality into quality time, every time I check my phone while we're out together or driving somewhere, he'll remind me "put the phone down Jenna, this is QUALITY time" :) Kind of sweet!

    Love your outfit!

  6. That looks like a marvelous date night...and you look fantastic. I'm sure your husband would have bought you if you had in fact been on sale in the wife department.

    We try to regularly do a date night out, but we tend to do the same sushi place over and over because it's quiet enough that we can talk and everything about the experience screams, "THERE ARE NO KIDS HERE," and that's glorious.

  10. Too funny! Date nights that are really good often having nothing to do with the location, but are just about the person you're with and the attitude you have. Glad you had fun!

  15. Yeah, our date nights usually consist of watching TV on the couch. I know that will all change once our little one arrives in May. But, as you proved, date night can be any time that you guys spend together enjoying each others company.

    Oh, and that milkshake looks sooooo good!

  16. You guys have way more fun at Home Depot than we do. I kind of hate that place. For a while, we were there just about every day. Also, you look cute. And...I like Craig's cardigan.

    I tagged you in a fun post over on my blog. I know you're super busy as a momma, so don't worry too too much about it.

  19. oh my gosh you guys are too cute. and your date looked like so much fun!

    as date night ideas? John and I are pretty much Craig and Lauren pre-baby. We watch netflix and eat takeout. It's kind of predictable and somewhat boring but we love it.

    Love you, friend!

  20. Hooray for date night! It's totally somehitng that you don't understand it's importance until after a baby...even getting away for a few hours is so refreshing! Also, Burgerville get in my belly!

  22. This might sound weird...it's not really a "date" since I don't date my best girlfriend, but we usually have a blast in Wal-Mart. Sounds weird, but we make it fun when we're together there.

  24. The few times the kids have been at daycare and we haven't been at work (we've taken a couple half days to catch a movie without missing our regular family time) and we've definitely hit Home Depot nearly every time we're alone (like twice :).
